Musical Sensation 'Wicked' Film Adaptation: Is it Worth the Hype?
On Monday, November 18th, I had the privilege of getting early access to Wicked as an Amazon Prime member. The film is 2 hours and 40 minutes long under Universal Pictures, and it's important to note that this is only part 1. Part 2 is set to release in November of next year. As a native New Yorker, I saw Wicked twice on Broadway as a younger child. The movie adaptation builds and pays homage to the iconic Broadway musical. The film provided a wonderful setting with sets from Munchlinland to Shiz being over the top satisfying the mystical and vibrant imagination of the land of Oz. The songs were executed beautifully with choreography reminiscent of Broadway shows. Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba with a highly diverse cast to note within the ensemble and roles such as Madame Morrible.
The key plot of the story is a telling of how Elphaba and Glinda meet in Shiz University and how a meeting with the Wizard of Oz uncovered the truth of bad things happening in Oz. It follows very closely to the Broadway Musical including all songs. It is 100% a musical film and for those not a fan of musicals, it's best to skip this one. Both Cynthia and Ariana played their roles to a T, giving every audience member the touch of their emotions and being entwined in the story.
